Golf Simulator PC Requirements: 3 Builds, $800-$2,500

My gaming laptop from 2021 ran GSPro at 12 frames per second. The ball teleported across the screen. It was unplayable. The computer is the single most common failure point in a simulator build โ€” and simulator sellers conveniently forget to mention it when they quote you a $3,000 launch monitor. You pick the launch monitor, the enclosure, the hitting mat, and the projector. Then you plug everything into a laptop that stutters on the driving range screen and crashes when you load Pebble Beach.

Each major sim package needs a different machine, and most builds are over-specced. The three build tiers below use real specs and real prices.

The Software Requirements (What You Are Actually Building For)

GSPro

GSPro is the standard. It is the best-looking and most demanding golf simulator software. The published specs:

Minimum (1080p low settings): Windows 10/11, RTX 3060 or RX 6600, 16GB RAM, 10GB free space.

Recommended (1080p high settings): RTX 3070 or 3060 Ti, 16GB RAM, SSD required.

4K ultra: RTX 3080 or better, 32GB RAM. The RTX 4070 and 4070 Super also handle 4K at high settings. The RTX 4080 runs it at ultra.

GSPro only runs on Windows. No Mac support. No integrated graphics. You need a dedicated Nvidia or AMD GPU.

E6 Connect

E6 is lighter than GSPro. Minimum spec is an RTX 2060 or GTX 1070, 8GB RAM. Recommended for 1080p is an RTX 3060 with 16GB RAM. E6 runs on both Windows and iOS. If you are building a budget sim and plan to use E6 instead of GSPro, you can build a cheaper PC.

Awesome Golf

Awesome Golf is the lightest of the three. It runs on an iPad. If Awesome Golf is your only sim software, you do not need a PC at all. Buy a $400 iPad and call it done. This guide only applies if you plan to run GSPro or E6.

Three Build Tiers

Budget Tier: 1080p GSPro (~$800)

For 1080p GSPro at medium settings, you need an RTX 3060 or RX 6600 with 16GB RAM. This is the entry point. Anything less and you are playing a slideshow.

A prebuilt gaming PC with an RTX 3060, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a 512GB SSD runs about $800 on Amazon. Look for brands like Skytech, iBuyPower, or CyberPowerPC. Build it yourself and you can hit $650.

What this buys: GSPro at 1080p medium settings running at 40-60 FPS. E6 Connect at 1080p high settings. Every course loads. The driving range is smooth. You will not win graphics awards, but you will play golf.

What it does not: 4K, ultra settings, or 120 FPS. Do not pair this with a 4K projector. The frame rate will drop into the teens.

Mid Tier: Smooth 1080p / Entry 4K (~$1,500)

For GSPro at 1080p ultra or 4K at medium settings, you need an RTX 4070 or RX 7800 XT with 32GB RAM.

A prebuilt RTX 4070 gaming PC with 32GB DDR5 RAM and a 1TB NVMe SSD runs about $1,500 on Amazon. This is the sweet spot. It runs GSPro at 1080p on ultra without breaking a sweat, and it handles 4K at medium settings with frame rates in the 40-50 FPS range.

What this buys: GSPro at 1080p ultra running 60+ FPS. GSPro at 4K medium running 40-50 FPS. E6 at 4K on high. Future-proof for the next 3-4 years of GSPro updates.

What it does not: 4K at ultra settings with ray tracing. For that, you need the next tier up.

4K Tier: Ultra Everything (~$2,500+)

For GSPro at 4K ultra, you need an RTX 4080 or RTX 5080 with 32GB RAM minimum. A prebuilt system with these specs runs $2,500-$3,000.

At this tier, the PC matches a 4K projector. Every tree renders. Shadows are correct. You can read the text on the leaderboard from 10 feet away. Is this necessary? For playing golf, no. For showing off your sim to friends who also build PCs, yes.

What this buys: GSPro at 4K ultra at 60+ FPS. Every sim software package at maximum settings. No compromises.

What it does not: The RTX 5090 tier is overkill for golf simulation. Save the $2,000 and buy a better hitting mat.

What I Would Actually Buy

If you are building a budget sim with a 1080p projector or TV: The $800 RTX 3060 prebuilt. It runs GSPro. It runs E6. It does not bottleneck your launch monitor. Do not spend more unless you plan to upgrade to 4K within two years.

If you have a 4K projector or plan to get one: The $1,500 RTX 4070 prebuilt with 32GB RAM. This is the price-performance peak. GSPro at 4K medium looks great. 4K ultra on a $2,500 PC looks 10% better for $1,000 more. That money buys a better hitting mat and a used launch monitor.

If you have a TrackMan and a $25,000 simulator room: You are not reading this guide. Buy whatever you want.

One thing I would not do: buy a laptop. Gaming laptops thermal-throttle after 30 minutes of GSPro. The GPU drops from 140 watts to 90 watts and your frame rate cuts in half. Buy a desktop. If you must use a laptop, buy a cooling pad and accept that it will be louder than your launch monitor.

Where to Buy

My gaming laptop lasted two sessions before I bought a desktop. Do not learn this lesson the way I did. Budget the PC before you budget the projector.
