Best Putting Gates for Beginners: 3 Under $50
I spent two years trying to fix my putting with $300 mats and $500 putters. Three-putted my way through roughly 40 rounds. Bought a putting arc. Bought a putting mirror. Bought a counterweight grip.
Turns out the answer was a $15 piece of plastic.
Putting gates are the cheapest putting training aid most golfers have never tried. You place two pegs just wider than your putter head on your target line. If you start the ball on line, it passes through clean. If you push or pull it, the ball hits a peg. That’s it. It’s the #1 fundamental beginners get wrong: starting the ball where you’re aiming.
For the price of a sleeve of Pro V1s, you can fix your putting stroke. After testing everything under $50, these three are the ones worth buying.
What Makes a Good Putting Gate for Beginners
Most putting gates are designed for single-digit handicaps who can already start the ball within half a degree of their target line. A 25-handicap beginner needs gates that are forgiving enough to use on day one and adjustable enough to grow with.
Three things matter. Width adjustability. Fixed 50mm gates are too narrow for beginners. You need to start wide and narrow down. Setup ease. If it takes five minutes to align the gates every time, you won’t use them. Surface compatibility. Some gates only work on hard floors. Some work on carpet and grass.
Price is secondary. A $15 gate you use daily beats a $47 gate that lives in your bag.

The included tees let you use these on a practice green immediately. On carpet, you’ll need a putting mat underneath because the pegs need something to stick into. The gates don’t have a standalone base, so hard floors are out.
Buy this if you want the cheapest, most effective putting training aid in golf and you have a putting mat or practice green. Skip if you practice on hardwood floors.
2. Visio Putting Gate Pack: $42
The Visio Gate Pack is three gates (50mm black, 55mm silver, 60mm red) with standalone bases and a measuring tape.
Visio is the brand Phil Kenyon uses with his tour students. You get a clear progression path. Start with the 60mm red gate at 40 inches from the ball. That requires less than 0.5 degrees of error. Then move to the 55mm silver gate at 14 inches (less than 1 degree). The 50mm black gate at 11 inches is tour-level precision at under 0.75 degrees.
The measuring tape is a genuinely useful inclusion. Beginners have no idea what three feet looks like on carpet. The tape takes the guesswork out of setup.
The downside is price. At $42, you’re paying nearly three times the EyeLine for the same training stimulus. The bases and three-gate progression add convenience, not capability. A beginner doesn’t need three gate sizes on day one.
Buy this if you practice exclusively indoors on hard floors and want a complete system. Skip if you’re on a budget or practice on grass.
3. Visio Mirrored Putting Gate: $40
This is the Visio gate with a mirror base and three adjustable magnet positions instead of three separate gates. Same training stimulus, different form factor.
The mirror is the feature here. You can check your eye alignment and putter face at setup while also training your start line. That’s two putting fundamentals in one device. The three magnet positions correspond to the same 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 degree accuracy levels as the Gate Pack, just without swapping physical gates.
It also gives you instant face-angle feedback. Left magnet means your face was closed at impact. Right magnet means open. Beginners who don’t have a coach can self-diagnose in seconds.
The catch: the mirror slides on smooth surfaces and ball position on the dimple hole isn’t perfectly repeatable. On carpet or a putting mat, the sliding is less of an issue.
Buy this if you want start-line feedback plus eye-alignment feedback in one device. Skip if you just want gates and don’t need the mirror.
The Verdict
I’d buy the EyeLine Putting Gates for $15. That’s cheaper than a sleeve of Pro V1s and you won’t lose them in the woods. Set them up at three feet with the wider gate. Hit 10 putts every morning. Narrow the gate when you can make 10 in a row. Then move back to five feet.
Do that for three weeks and your start-line consistency will improve more than it would with a $300 putting mat. Once you’ve outgrown the EyeLine gates, upgrade to the Visio Pack for the tighter tolerances.
The Visio Mirrored Gate is a nice tool. But for a beginner, the simple magnetic pegs give you 95% of the benefit at a third of the price. Start cheap. Practice daily. The equipment isn’t what fixes your putting.
